In the Friends Select Lower School, children discover the joy of learning and begin to acquire the successful student’s skills and discipline. The imaginative and rigorous curriculum explores theme-based projects in language arts, mathematics and social studies. Teachers, embodying the Quaker tenet of respect, honor each child as an individual while implementing a comprehensive academic program. Children grow in confidence and sense of self as teachers display and recognize work, applaud performances and encourage classroom participation.
Students learn what it means to be in community—whether in Meeting for Worship or participating in service to others. Community then expands outward to the city, where students visit nearby museums, public gardens and parent workplaces to connect classroom learning to real life. Class size usually ranges from 17 to 20 students, with assistant teachers providing additional support in pre-kindergarten through grade three.
