1935
Kitty Robinson Yanak
At least one member of the graduating class of 1935 is alive and kicking, busy, well, and wishing there could be more hours in the day. I'm Kitty [Catherine] Robinson, now more familiarly known as "Robin Yanak", living in Prescott, AZ. My favorite husband, John, died a year ago, and after 68 years, I miss him more every day. There are still so many more things to do in this world, poor world. Fearfully, I realize that my poor efforts will not suffice. Hope lies with students now in wonderful schools, like my FSS.

John Moon
I got a superb education at the school. I was one of the last classes to be taught by the "great old Quakers" -- Master Arnold Todd, the Latin teacher who commuted from Doylestown and who changed my life, and to whose memorial service I went in a blizzard. I took five years of Latin because of him. There were seven people in the class my senior year. I can still quote the opening sentences of Julius Caesar, Cicero and the Aeneid. My father, Master Arnold and a certain Presbyterian minister had the greatest of all people's effect on my young life.

Henrietta Starr Malloy Jaeger
I have just finished writing my book called, "I've Strolled Into Madness." It is a true story about a psychiatrist and his family who lived on the grounds of a state mental hospital in the 1950s. Madness chronicles how living amongst the truly insance affected them and how they witnessed, first-hand, the decay of the mental health system. A view rarely seen in the history books of the establishment.

Joel Nobel
Editor's note: Dr. Joel Nobel's prototype of the medical emergency crash cart, referred to as "Max" was recently accepted by the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. "Max" was originally designed and patented by Dr. Joel Nobel, while he was a surgical resident at Philadelphia's Pennsylvania Hospital in 1965, three years before he founded ECRI Institute. The cart, designed to save lives by enabling rapid medical action, carries instruments for cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other medical supplies. Dr. Nobel's invention was timely, as the United States was at the forefront of cardiology in the 20th century.

Kudos to Judy Love Keogh for hosting a lovely lunch this Spring. It was a delight to see Carol, " Darcy", Janet and "Zel" there.
All of the Krupnicks and Loewenbergs continue to flourish. Joe and I enjoy being "equal opportunity grandparents" to eleven residing in states along the Northeast corridor. They range in age from college senior (Barnard) to entering pre-school in Virginia and Massachusetts. The next major trip for the two of us will be to Hamburg and Berlin.
We both send good wishes to all of the Class of '55.
Judy Love Keogh
Editor's note: Judy Love Keogh welcomed her first great-grandchild, Benjamin Christopher Bowlin, in July 2010. Benjamin is the son of Hannah Keogh and Eric Bowlin, and the grandson of Jennifer Keogh, '82.

The rest of the year I am in Brookline, Massachusetts with available room, but less scenery. I'm remembering class of 1955 with delight. Joann (Soloff) Green Breuer - expecting no additional names.

John WatersOne of the recent beauties in my life is that I am a first time grandfather to twins, a girl and a boy, of my son and his wife. They live in Boston and my wife and I in Valley Forge. The six hour drive to visit with them is well worth the time. My wife Debbie and I recently travelled to Alaska for a 12 day cruise tour. That's five days of a land tour and 6 of a cruise. Fabulous. It was a trip that exceeded our expectations of seeing the beauty of the outdoors, and the rich and deep culture and history of the people. I am the clerk of the Valley Friends Meeting, in Valley Forge, PA, Building and Grounds committee and I enjoy being involved in the preservation of our building, burial ground, community garden and labyrinth. Last year we created a meditation garden with a seven circuit classical design labyrinth as the focal point. The meditation garden is open to the public and has been visited by many people from around the area. My continued involvement in the Friends community is a joyful part of life.
I'm still working full time as an industry leader on the business applications selling team of Oracle Corp. Debbie and I often travel to our condo in Myrtle Beach where we enjoy playing golf and being in the ocean. The Myrtle Beach area is where we expect to retire to or move to before retirement.

I am still alive and well and living on 2 acres in the mountains and wilds of Prescott, Arizona. I Just celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary. I semi-retired 10 years ago and have a very active modified law practice which keeps me in top shelf Vodka for cocktail hour. I Survived a bout with Prostate Cancer last year but am fully recovered and cancer free. I'm Active with the Disabled Vietnam Vets (as I am one) and do pro bono legal work at the VA Hospital. I'm a hard core Biker; riding motorcycles, RV'ing and enjoying every day. We take Monthly RV travels to the wilds of California, Northern Nevada and the Midwest. I never recovered from the death of our two oldest precious children so I try and stay very busy. I've never been to Disneyland so for my 65th Birthday in October, we are going to get my mouse ears. Lots of company from friends escaping the heat every weekend but always room for Class of '63 that comes West .

We really enjoyed our 45th reunion in May. Thanks to everyone who organized the event and to everyone who attended. At the end of May, our older daughter, Abigail, gave birth to our first grandchild - Lucius Donald Rufo - in Chicago. Great joy! Melinda and I are now "bipolar". In 2008, we travelled to Antarctica (penguins and ice). This year, in late June, we went north to Svalbard/Spitsbergen (only 600 miles from the North Pole)! We saw beautiful ice, polar bears, walrus, seals, beluga (white) whales, reindeer, and much more…..but no Santa sightings. Also, no sunsets or darkness for 2 weeks. Quite an adventure.

I am currently working on a project called the Friends Center City Retirement Community, located at 22 Front Street. It has been an interesting experience to learn the complexities of designing a community and bringing it to fruition. It has been daunting in light of the economic environment, but we’re ready to go. The community is a brand-new 42-unit, mid-rise building with a central courtyard, overlooking the Delaware, close to everything. It is a unique model for a senior community, enabling residents of any age to stay closely connected with the city and all it offers.

My wife, Ruth, and I love living in Amherst, MA, where we have been since 1989. The five colleges make this area of farms and old New England towns rich intellectually and culturally and leftward leaning politically. It totally suits us and we are planted here for the duration. My daughter, Becca, is a junior at Wesleyan University, my alma mater. Though she is majoring in psychology (my wife and I both being clinical psychologists), she has plans to go into teaching. My son, Jeremy, is a senior in high school. He is quite involved with music and he plays drums in an alternative rock band (you can check them out if you google Client Nine Amherst). I continue to enjoy working as a therapist and psychoanalyst, and teaching at a psychoanalytic institute, at Tufts Medical School, and at Smith College School for Social Work. Ruth and I, being both fifty-somethings and soon to be empty nesters, have recently been expanding into some new areas. Now that we have moved through the years of intense immersion in parenting and career development, we are finding the time, energy, and interest for various book groups and study groups, classes and workshops in yoga and meditation, and committee work at our synagogue. I love to keep up with FSS classmates and plan to continue going to reunions every five years. See you all for our 40th in 2013!

Editor's note: Cindy Wanerman celebrated her bat mitzvah at the newly resotored synagogue at the historic Eastern State Penitentiary in June 2010 - 40 years after the traditional age for the rite of passage, but timed appropriately for her: Wanerman championed the restoration of the sacred spot, which had lain in ruins. It is believed to be the first synagogue ever built in a U.S. prison.

After living most of the first 50 years in and around Philadelphia, my wife Bonnie and I moved to Maryland and I accepted a position in the District. Working at The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars as their Vice President of Administration and CFO. It's a lot of fun to work a few blocks away from the White House, on 16th Street. We are lucky that both our boys are in the area - as Ian (26) is the director of BBYO in Rockville, and Michael (22) is finishing up at George Washington and lives in Georgetown. I am still into photography, selling a number of photos over the past few years and freelancing; and passing the passion onto my sons. In addition, I decided to go back for 'another' masters. I am going to the University of Maryland for an MBA and will graduate in May 2010. This is a concentrated full-time program, as I work full time for TWC. A little over 20 years since the last time I was in school - it's great to be in that environment again. I also continue my involvement in a youth exchange program with Bulgaria, making my 5th trip in 7 years with another 21 high school students. Bonnie and I also house many of the youth that come to the USA and spend time here. After school is over, I hope to develop a not-for-profit that will concentrate services to assist at-risk youth nationwide. More on that in a year or two!

Here's an update on my news - I met my wife, Theresa during the summer of 1990. It was just prior to my 30th birthday. Theresa, her daughter Tara Anne and I travelled extensively for years. We visited Western Europe, Central and South America and all but 5 States in the US. We lived in Orlando, NYC, Ithaca, Seattle, Las Vegas , Fairfield Iowa, Santa Fe and now Dennisville, New Jersey. Finally be bought a home on 5 acres in Dennisville nestled in the woods surround by a 25 acre horse farm and a national state forest. We are 8 miles to the beach at Stone Harbor.
I have been a wellness coach for 18 years and proud to say we home-schooled our daughter. She studied for 3 years, at Community College of Philadelphia, took 140 credits and achieved a 3.83. Tara went on to night school at University of Pennsylvania and worked days. Together we moved to Ithaca where she got her Master of Science at Park School of Communications. We are happy to announce the arrival of Reid Scott Hershman! Reid was born at Sibley Hospital in September, 2010. He weighed in at 7 pounds 11 ounces and was 21 inches long. Both mommy and baby are doing great. Aurora (Rorie) got to meet her baby brother on Thursday and we were able to return home on Friday afternoon. To Kill a Mockingbird, which has been one of my favorite books since I read it in middle school at FSS. With parenthood, work and our second job--volunteering as coaches for the cycling team at Columbia University--life is busy but very fun. I'm also working on a young adult novel that is essentially a coming of age story about a girl who tries to live her life according to the lessons she learns from
Little Women. I don't have a publisher yet but I started a blog where I talk about the process of getting published and my writing. Check it out at

Things are going really well for me - I just graduated with my 2nd degree (BSN), and I will be following in my mother's footsteps by becoming a nurse in the very near future. I got engaged last Thanksgiving to a wonderful man that I've been with for 5 years, and who has supported me through all my educational paths. I promised him I'd wait until after the October 2010 wedding to begin my Master's!

I've changed careers recently. I left my nonprofit job this past June as I was accepted into the Philadelphia Teaching Fellows program. This is a program that partners with the School District of Philadelphia to help people from other career fields transition into teaching in some of Philadelphia's highest needs public schools. I was accepted as a Spanish teacher and I am currently student teaching at Ben Franklin High for summer school. Later in the summer I will be matched with another school in the district for the 2010-2011 school year. I'll also be working towards my certification and Masters degree in Secondary Education at Chestnut Hill College.
