Mary Ellen Senat Dixon '29
Mary El to her friends, attended Friends Select from 1925 to 1929. She was active in all sports that were available to girls at that time. She played hockey, basketball, baseball and was an active gymnast. During her junior and senior years she was on the honor squad for all the sports that she played. In addition to team participation she managed the baseball team and captained the hockey team in her senior year.
Joseph McLaughlin ‘37
While at Friends Select "Joe" participated in basketball, baseball and soccer. He is best known as a talented soccer coach during the 40’s and 50’s. Many of Friends Select’s fine soccer players received their training under "Joe’s" watchful eye. His dedication is remembered by many of his students.
James H. Mearns ‘41
An outstanding athlete who played soccer, basketball, baseball and tennis at the varsity level, James went on to win a varsity letters at the University of Pennsylvania in soccer. He retired after running his family plumbing and heating business.
Helene (Bunny) Tilhou DeCray '46
While at Friends Select Helene, better known as "Bunny", was an exceptional athlete. She played varsity hockey, basket ball, baseball and tennis in grades 9, 10, 11 and 12, captaining the hockey team in 12th grade and the basketball team in 11th and 12th. She made the All Star Hockey Team in grades 10, 11 and 12, and was selected as the co-captain in 12th grade. In 11th grade, the varsity basket ball team was undefeated. In 12th grade the team won seven out of eight games with Bunny as the high scorer with 104 points. After graduating from FSS Bunny attended Temple University receiving her degree in Physical Education. She taught at the Friends School in Haverford and then at West Chester Friends for 26 years where she was the director of physical education as well as the Director of Pre primary education.
Andrew D. Lucine ‘46
While at Friends Select, Andy was a member of the soccer, basketball and baseball teams. He is best remembered for his outstanding soccer ability. He represented Friends Select on the All Philadelphia Scholastic Soccer Team.
Lyn Walton Gill '62
Lyn played hard and studied hard during her years at Friends Select, and credited fellow Hall of Fame inductee Betty Tayes with providing inspiration to succeed in athletics. By bringing two of her daughters with her to the induction ceremony, she hoped to pass on the desire to do your best in everything to another generation.
Terry McMenamin ‘66
In addition to being an outstanding athlete at Friends Select, Terry later returned to the school to teach and coach, from 1970 to 1988. He coached soccer, basketball and baseball, leading the Falcons to the Friends League basketball title in 1982. Terry works at the Ambler YMCA as a group supervisor.
Allen B. Massiah '69
In addition to being an outstanding athlete at Friends Select—playing on varsity soccer, tennis and basketball teams—Allen was a star in the classroom.
Trixie Beller Heck '69
Trixie was treasurer and president during various upper school years for the Girls Athletic Association. She delighted in playing field hockey and volleyball, and continued to play in college. Trixie was also active in dance and gymnastics.
Michael Fitts ‘71
Michael was a standout in both soccer and wrestling. He was a captain of the wrestling team and earned most valuable player on the team in 1971. Michael also was co-winner of the Coaches’ Award in 1971, the award which goes to the outstanding athlete at the school. After serving as a law professor at the law school of the University of Pennsylvania, Michael was named dean of the law school in 2000.
Mitchell Bayer '74
Mitchell was an all-around athlete while at Friends Select. He played soccer and basketball and was a member of the Five-Letter Club. Mitchell’s team participated in the first Friends Select Basketball Invitational, where he was named tournament MVP. During his junior and senior years, he was captain of the varsity soccer team. He also was a member of the InterAc all star team in his junior and senior years. Mitchell is well remembered for his hustle and team spirit.
Laurence C. Eisenlohr ‘75
While at Friends Select "Ike" was an excellent athlete. He was both a soccer player and a wrestler. "Ike" received the MVP award in both of these sports. His commitment to excellence is remembered by teammates and coaches alike.
John M. Eisenlohr '76
John was a lifer here at Friends Select along with his brother and sister. John was a member of the 5 letter club receiving Varsity letters four years for wrestling and three years for soccer. In 1974 he had a 9 and 2 record. He won first place in the Quaker City wrestling tournament and in the Girard tournament. He was MVP in wrestling in 1976 as well as being chosen as co MVP, outstanding wrestler in the Quaker City Wrestling Tournament. He also was Captain of the Varsity wrestling team. John was a non stop hard working wrestler who was extremely competitive but unselfish with his teammates. He also played soccer in the position of halfback and full back. After graduation John attended Swarthmore College. He earned his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Rice University in 1987.
Charles T. Mitchell, III '76
Charlie was a first class athlete while at Friends Select. He played soccer, baseball and basketball. He was a member of the 5 letter club and was named MVP in both soccer and basketball in 1976. Charlie was captain of the soccer and basketball teams in both his junior and senior years. Those who played with him remember him for his skill and tremendous team spirit. Those who played after him remember that he was the man. After graduation Charlie attended Drexel University and now is an engineer. He is active in various civic organizations and his church. He still returns to Friends Select to play in the Alumni game when he can.
Mary Eisenlohr ‘78
During her years at Friends Select, Mary swam and played field hockey. She received both the MVP and MIP award in 1976 for hockey as well as the MVP in swimming in 1978. Mary is remembered not only for her dedication to improving her own skills but also for her constant support of her teammates.
Robert W. Place '79
Bob was an excellent athlete while at FSS. He was a member of the varsity soccer, basketball and baseball teams. He was named Co-MVP on the baseball team in 1979 with his brother, as well as being awarded the Coaches’ Award in his senior year. Bob’s best remembered for his quiet determination to achieve excellence.
William B. Place '79
Bill was an accomplished athlete while at Friends Select. He was involved in soccer, wrestling and baseball. He became a member of the Five-Letter Club in 10th grade. He was awarded both the Coaches’ Award and the Scholar Athlete Award in 1979. According to long time Athletic Director Ken Bailey, Bill’s "heavy duty work ethic and leadership by example exemplify the Friends Select spirit."
Derek A. Evans ‘82
Derek was an excellent athlete while at Friends Select. He was a member of the soccer, baseball and basketball teams. He received MVP awards in all three of his sports as well as being the co-recipient of the coach’s award in 1982. Derek was also co-captain of Friends Select’s only Friends League Championship Basketball Team in 1982.
Margaret Kerrick ‘83
Margaret played three seasons of sports every year from sixth grade to graduation: field hockey, basketball and soccer. She was co-captain of the swimming team and was the co-winner of the senior award as outstanding female athlete. At Earlham College, she set school records for goals scored in a season and career in field hockey and was captain and most valuable player in softball. She has coached in college and high school for many years.
Martha Kerrick ‘83
Martha played three seasons of sports every year at Friends Select from sixth grade on: field hockey, swimming and softball. She was co-captain of both the swimming and field hockey teams. She won the senior award as outstanding female athlete. At Earlham College, Martha won the George Van Dyke Award as the school’s Most Valuable Woman Athlete. She was the head field hockey coach at Moravian College.
Hank Beresin ‘87
Hank was an excellent student, making academic honors in junior and senior years and was elected co-president of student government. He played four years of soccer, basketball and baseball. By his senior year he was captain of the soccer and basketball teams. He won a number of awards, including outstanding basketball player as a senior and earned the coaches’ award as Outstanding Male Athlete, the highest award for career athletic excellence at the school.
Colin Convey ’93
Colin had an extraordinary athletic career at Friends Select. He earned 12 varsity letters in three sports (soccer, basketball and baseball) and was a two-time captain in each sport. He was selected as a Friends Schools league all-star three times in soccer and basketball and twice in baseball. Colin scored over 1,200 points during his FSS basketball career. After FSS, Colin attended Swarthmore College where he was first men's basketball player named first-team all-conference. For his career, he is second all time at Swarthmore in assists and fourth in steals and three-point goals. After earning his bachelor’s degree from Swarthmore, Colin went on to earn an M.B.A. from Columbia University. Colin currently works in investment banking in New York City.
Betty Tayes
Betty, a former coach, teacher and mentor, was given a heartfelt induction by Trixie Beller Heck ’69. "She was dedicated to the beliefs of FSS," wrote Trixie in her nomination letter. "She gave her life to the students of FSS…she deserves recognition."
Ken came to Friends Select in 1961 as a Lower School English Teacher. In the middle of his first year he became the Athletic Director under the tutelage of Betty Tayes. In 1965 Ken began the Quaker City Wrestling Tournament which continues today. He has been the varsity wrestling and soccer coach as well as middle school soccer coach. Ken Bailey is a Friends Select School institution.
Herb Kerns (coach)
Herb Kerns coached at Friends Select for almost twenty years. He spent many years as the junior varsity boys' basketball coach, but also coached both middle school and upper school soccer and basketball. He was nominated by alumni who lauded his intense coaching style which was always accompanied by his caring for each student who worked with him.
