 A new upper school club has a very clear mission: to help improve the lives of children born with cleft lips, cleft palates and other facial deformities. Operation Smile Club is named for the international organization it supports through fund-raisers such as the bake sale on November 11. Three club members – juniors Amanda Mauri, Michelle Degutis and Cammie Anderson – were on hand during one bake sale shift to explain their club’s raison d’etre. “In the United States, you don’t see many kids with facial deformities,” said Michelle Degutis, “because they are usually surgically corrected soon after birth. But due to poverty and lack of medical resources, many children in other countries have to live with abnormalities.” Operation Smile sends teams of medical professionals all over the world to surgically correct these conditions.
