The costumed character Despereaux stopped by on December 3 to meet dozens of lower school students who filed into the library to make his acquaintance.  Lower school librarian Paula Cairo read a portion of The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo in advance to provide context for the visit for the rare student unfamiliar with the book.  The book, whose full title is The Tale of Despereaux: Being the Story of a Mouse, a Princess, Some Soup, a Rat, and a Spool of Thread, won the coveted Newbery Medal in 2004.  A movie version opened in December.
