THE SOUND OF MUSIC - SING-A-LONG
Back by Popular Demand... and with Better Sound! Friday, January 13, 2012

Thanks for singing with us. View more pictures here.

October 2011- A Friends Select mother and daughter duo marched to Dilworth Plaza to witness the raising of the rainbow flag outside City Hall in honor of LGBT History Month. It is the second time ever the rainbow flag has been flown at City Hall. Shelly Spector and her seventh grade daughter carried a Friends Select banner to demonstrate the school's support of equal rights and the LGBT community. Spector and her daughter joined several hundred LGBT supporters, Mayor Nutter and other city officials at the ceremony.  To see more photographs, click here.

On behalf of the Friends Select LGBT Committee we would like to welcome everyone back to the 2011-2012 school year. The committee meetings and its events are open to the entire Friends Select community.  Our goal is to bring members of the community together and have fun. Our meetings are short and casual, and offer both food and child care. Any proceeds from the events (like last years Sing-a-long Sound Of Music) go right back to helping the school and our kids.  Please mark your calendars for the following dates:

Wed.  Oct. 12th  Committee meeting at 6 p.m. (refreshments at 5:30). RSVP
Friday Jan. 13th  Annual costume optional sing-a-long movie night 6 p.m.
Wed.  Feb. 1st    Committee meeting 6 p.m. (refreshments at 5:30). RSVP

As our statement of purpose proclaims, the Friends Select Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans gender ( LGBT) Committee is committed to assisting the school, through social events and service projects, in creating and maintaining a community of inclusiveness, understanding, acceptance and respect that embraces and celebrates the diverse sexual orientations and gender identities within the school community.

We welcome additional ideas for projects and activities for the coming school year!

The LGBT Committee with guidance from the upper middle school librarian, Maureen Haurin, and the director of libraries, Sandy Guild, purchased over $300 worth of books from Giovanni's Room with the proceeds of the Sound of Music event. Developmentally appropriate, LGBT themed books were selected for all three divisions and given to given to both libraries. All of the books will contain a book plate indicating that they were donated by the LGBT Committee.

The bowling event, co-sponsored by the Families for Ethnic and Cultural Diversity committee was great fun.  Look for photos on the FSS website soon.

Finally, the LGBT Spring Service Project collecting supplies for the Attic Youth Center was a success. A nice amount of materials were received, the contributions were supplemented with $50 of supplies from the school store paid for by the Sound of Music event.  Items have been delivered to the Attic and are much appreciated.

Thank you all for your participation in the LGBT Committee during the '10-11 school year!

Friends Select School and the City: Pride over Time
Special Project March 2010: How far have we come?

This exhibit displayed in Friends Select's front lobby in March of 2010 was sponsored by SAGA (Sexuality and Gender Alliance) and the LGBT Committee of the FSS PA. It examined the history of the LGBT rights movement in Philadelphia and at Friends Select School through photographs, publications and other memorabilia.  Special thanks to Giovanni's Room for their donations.

The Friends Select School community consists of individuals from varied backgrounds, family structures, sexual orientations and gender identities. The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender(LGBT) committee is committed to assisting the school, through social events and service projects, in creating and maintaining a community of inclusiveness, understanding, acceptance and respect that embraces and celebrates the diverse sexual orientation and gender identities within the school community.
