Haiti 10 Months Later
Former Faculty Member Visits FSS

Keeping Haiti in the Light from Friends Select School on Vimeo.

On November 3, Sara Wolf shared her impressions of life in Haiti today and the impact of the January 12 earthquake. Wolf has been in Port au Prince since shortly after the disaster, working with an international aid organization.  Right after her visit to Friends Select, Haiti was deluged by Hurricane Tomas and now confronts the growing threat of cholera. Wolf returned to Haiti on November 4.

Friends Select has begun advertising on Yelp!, the first school in the region to do so, according to the company. Yelp!, an online word-of-mouth review site, has been lauded in Business Week and The New York Times for its credibility among consumers. A Yelp! video crew will be on campus on Wednesday, Dec. 8, filming classroom activity and conducting short interviews. All this will be boiled down to a short video, which will be posted on the Yelp! Friends Select business page. Look for it soon.

Friends Select has established an alumni/ae Facebook page. So far, there are no schoolwide Facebook or Twitter accounts, but stay tuned. Friends Select continues to evaluate these and other online mechanisms for staying connected.

The local blog, PhillySchoolSearch, carries Friends Select announcements, open house dates and parent reviews on a blog devoted to discussion around educational choice in Philadelphia.

Kidsincentercity, a local Web site established and maintained by Center City District, is a wonderful resource for parents in the Philadelphia region.  Sign up for its e-newsletter, and you’ll receive notice of kid-friendly events and happenings throughout the year.

Republic Bank made a significant contribution to Friends Select School under a state program that enables businesses to satisfy their Pennsylvania tax liability by diverting dollars they would have paid in state taxes to schools. Vice president and regional manager Jason Greer, pictured here with head of school Rose Hagan, presented the $10,000 check in October, after touring the school earlier this fall.

The Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program has helped Friends Select secure  support from area businesses. EITC gifts support student financial aid at Friends Select.  For more information about the program, contact Chris Jefferson, director of development, at (215) 561-5900, ext. 141.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is coming up on Monday, January 17.  School will be closed that day, giving families the opportunity to join in the Parent Association service project.  Watch for details in an upcoming e-mail announcement.

We welcome photos and short videos from Friends Select parents, alumni/ae and other members of our community.  To submit something, contact Tina Dougherty, art director, at tina@friends-select.org or (215) 561-5900, ext. 130.  Please include a few sentences of description, along with your name and contact information, in case we have questions.
