Lower School
Pre-K through 5th grade
The lower school at Friends Select is a place of vitality, warmth and intellectual richness. Children discover the joy of learning and begin to acquire the skills and discipline of the successful student.
The curriculum is intentional, imaginative and rigorous while remaining gentle in structure. Teachers instruct in the areas of language arts, mathematics, social studies and science, often using theme-based curriculum. Based on the Quaker tenet of respect, teachers seek to honor each child as an individual while promoting a comprehensive academic program.
Children see their work displayed and recognized. They routinely take to the stage and perform. In doing so, they grow in confidence and sense of self. They also learn what it means to be a member of a community--in classroom interaction, in Meeting for Worship, through the role models provided by adults and older students, and through involvement from the earliest years in service to others.
Lower school students learn about the life of the city and begin to explore its abundant resources. Visiting nearby museums, community gardens or parents' workplaces helps students make connections between their classroom learning and the outside world.
