Athletics

The athletic program, open to students in grades six through twelve, helps students build a sense of self-esteem and of community through teamwork and individual accomplishment.  Students learn skills and strategies of the games and participation in the athletic program encourages good sportsmanship, responsibility, and time management skills.

Philosophy

As a member of the Friends Schools’ League, Friends Select’s athletic program is essential to the life of the school and the wider community which supports it.  Teamwork, the building of community and school spirit, a healthy work ethic, sportsmanship, spiritual growth, physical development, and courtesy are some of the outgrowths of our program.  Competition and the pursuit of excellence influence our athletic program; however, the pursuit of self-improvement of the student athlete is a higher goal and the program is inclusive of boys and girls of varying skill levels.  Two essential goals of the program are to have the student athlete gain a greater sense of self, as well as to build and strengthen the Friends Select School community.

Friends Schools’ League (FSL) Philosophy

The eight schools which comprise the Friends Schools’ League share many common beliefs and concerns based on Friends’ testimonies.  Among them are the value of athletic competition and the need to keep such competition in the proper perspective.  The operation of the Friends Schools’ League is greatly facilitated by this vast body of common beliefs and experiences.  The League is guided in all its undertakings by the fundamental principles upon which the schools are founded.  The integrity and intrinsic value of each individual is of primary concern.  In keeping with Friends’ policies, all league decisions are based on the consensus of the athletic directors, subject to the approval of the school heads.
