Social Justice

Interior Masthead

During Friends Select’s annual Social Justice Week, the upper school pauses classes to allow students to deeply examine a contemporary social justice issue through an interdisciplinary "track." The week encourages and celebrates student-driven inquiry and agency. All "track" issues are decided on by students, and student leaders work with teachers throughout the fall semester to plan the programming for each track, including coordinating with outside speakers and workshop leaders. While many of the issues examined exist at a national and international level, Friends Select’s Social Justice Week explicitly uses the lens of Philadelphia to understand how these issues operate, and can be addressed, at the local level. The work of Social Justice Week continues throughout the year, as students use what they have learned to partner with organizations around the city for Spring into Action Days.
