Lego league

It is never too early to discover STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics)! FIRST LEGO® League Jr. is designed to introduce STEAM concepts to kids ages 6 to 10 through tools they know and love – LEGO® blocks. At FSS LEGO® League, we believe that children are naturally inquisitive and are great problem-solvers, and hope to foster that innate ability through play!

Guided by parent/volunteer Coaches, teams (up to 6 members, grades K-4) explore a real-world scientific problem and showcase their learnings, creativity, and solutions in a fun, non-competitive environment that celebrates their enthusiasm for problem-solving! Past event themes have included nanotechnology, space exploration, food safety, recycling, and energy generation. Students work in their teams to invent creative solutions to each year’s theme over a period of 6-8 weeks (usually 6 to 8- 1-hour meetings led by parent volunteers). They create a simple Show Me Poster and a motorized model of what they learned using LEGO® elements, simple machines (levers, pulleys, wheels, etc.) and motors. In the process, teams learn about teamwork, the wonders of science and technology, and core values (such as respect, sharing, and critical thinking). At the close of each season, all teams come together at the FSS EXPO EVENT (think: Science Fair meets Super Bowl!) to present to “judges”, share ideas, learn from other teams, celebrate, and have fun!

FIRST LEGO® League Jr. teams get to:

· Explore challenges facing today's scientists

· Discover real-world math and science

· Design and build a challenge-related model with a moving part using LEGO®

· Create a Show Me Poster and practice presentation skills in front of “judges”

· Develop critical growth skills (confidence, teamwork, teaching, self-learning)
