This class reviews the elements of the formal writing process, with special emphasis on crafting the five-paragraph essay. Over the course of one week, students will read a short story, generate an original thesis statement, then review how to defend their thesis with supportive body paragraphs. Students will craft a 5-paragraph essay. Special attention will be paid to body-paragraph construction; we will spend time developing strong analytical paragraphs that are well-supported with textual evidence and critical analysis. This class is ideal for rising ninth and tenth graders who want to review and practice expository writing.
