Lower School Family Association Welcome Letter 2021-22

Hello from your lower school representatives to the Family Association (FA) board! We are excited to welcome everyone to the 2021-22 school year.

The FA board acts as liaisons between you, Friends Select families, and the school administration. As lower school reps, we meet regularly with Dave Younkin and Amy Segel, and welcome your feedback to share. Our goal is to strengthen our community and support school efforts.

We encourage you to "attend" FA meetings, affinity groups, and events—all of which are listed in the Bulletin and school calendar. You can sign up to join an FA group here as well.

Throughout the year, you will receive a lot of communication. We want to highlight the primary communication channels the school uses to share news with families:

  • 2021-22 Updated Health and Safety Protocols: In this section of the Friends Select website, you will find information about health and safety protocols that the school has implemented in response to the realities of the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Parent Portal: The Parent Portal on the Friends Select website is full of information about upcoming events, After School Program updates, lower school information/forms, and more. It is accessible 24/7 and includes the school directory.

  • Bulletin: The lower school sends messages through the Bulletin, which is emailed weekly on Thursday afternoons and includes timely reminders and upcoming events. In addition, there may be special messages from Tr. Dave, which will either be in the Bulletin or a special lower school dedicated email. Should you have any questions regarding these emails, or you are not receiving them, email Susan (susanh@friends-select.org) in the lower school office.

  • Class Representatives and Class Google Groups: Every class has a class representative. They share information from the FA and work with teachers for grade-specific events. After classes begin, your class representative will be in contact via email to introduce themselves and help orient you to grade-specific information. They will share the Google group address for your class and all families can use that to coordinate with each other. If you are interested in being a class rep, please let us know by emailing familyassociation@friends-select.org. It’s a great way to get to know the families and kids in your child’s class.

Enjoy the rest of your summer! Thank you for your engagement and involvement in our school community. We look forward to the year together.

Best,

Kara Bremner P’30, ’33, Shermika Gant P’33, Alexis Ogdie P’30, ’33

Kara Bremner P’30 ’33

When Kara is not running around with the kids Rex (4th grade) Ruby (1st grade) from activity to activity, Kara works with her husband Matt in the property management business. She was also a lower school rep last year.

Shermika Gant P’33

Shermika was a first-time FSS parent last year. Mom to Sage in 1st grade, she looks forward to getting to know more members of our community this year!

Alexis Ogdie P’30, ’33

Alexis is mom to Elysia (4th grade) and Elina (1st grade) and when the kids are at school, she is a rheumatologist and epidemiologist at Penn, specializes in inflammatory arthritis, and spends most of her time on research. However, one of her favorite jobs was class rep in pre-K and K the last couple years!
