Upcoming Family Association Holiday Events
FA Kwanzaa Celebration
The Multicultural Family and Friends Group would like to welcome the entire Friends Select community to the second annual Kwanzaa celebration on Friday, December 8, from 5-7 p.m. Let's come together for this festive celebration, which honors Black culture, unity, self-determination, creativity, heritage, and community.
Founded in 1966, Kwanzaa is an African American cultural celebration, which is derived from a Kiswahili word meaning "first" and incorporates the first fruit or harvest celebrations found in many African communities. Contrary to popular belief, Kwanzaa is not Black Christmas and holds no religious affiliation. The seven principles of Kwanzaa focus on unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith.
This year's program will feature Philadelphia's premier Kwanzaa historian and community activist, one of Philadelphia's former poet laureates, a dance performance, and contributions from FSS students across divisions. There will be catered food as well as local vendors whose crafts and goods will be available for purchase.
We look forward to seeing everyone! Please RSVP here.
