2018 Spring Sports Recap

The growth of the Friends Select athletics program is completely on display. Every middle school team this year has grown to the point of adding a second—and sometimes a third—team to the program. This has allowed us to add even more coaches to our staff, as well. We are excited about the future and adding such impressive numbers from our middle school to our upper school programs. We already have more JV teams in our program than previous years. And, we are also looking forward to 2018-2019 being the first year of varsity squash in our upper school.

Varsity Baseball
The 2018 Varsity Baseball season began with a return trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina where the team played three games and bonded together. After a 3-6 start to the season, the players worked hard and finished the second half of the season, going 6-3. The team won the FSL Quaker Cup. Many of the players reached career milestones and made individual achievements that helped the team be successful. The team will miss graduating seniors Jack Gontowski ’18, Jacob Taranta ’18, Noah Semel ’18, Denis Widdicombe ’18, Grant Pavol ’18, Phil Sieg ’18, Matt Chin ’18, and DeSean Smith ’18, but a talented group of underclassmen are ready to step up and represent Friends Select next season. The crew program continued it steady growth this year by adding 11 new freshmen to the team. Combined with the impressive leadership from the senior class, this was a nice season on the river for the Falcons. Ahana Rosha ’18 placed second in the varsity girls single at Cities. In total, four FSS boats qualified for the semifinals that day. Yunyi Anderson ’18 and Rachel Anthony ’18 placed third in the lightweight double at Stotesbury, the largest HS regatta in the world.
