Varsity Boys Basketball

After nine seniors graduated from last year’s team, we weren’t sure what to expect from the team in 2018-19. However, an influx of talent into the program and the quick growth of the returning young players made this the Falcons’ most successful season since 2012. They won their 12th game of the year with a 47-28 victory over Germantown Friends in front of a full gym at Friends Select in the Quaker Cup semifinals. The Falcons then played in the Quaker Cup finals and in an amazing game versus Abington Friends to end the season. It was a play-in game for the Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association (PAISAA) state tournament. The game went back and forth for four quarters at Manor College before Abington Friends won by five points with a few free throws at the end. The growth of the program was evident this season. With so many young players returning with key roles, combined with an impressive coaching staff, the bar has risen for this program.

Varsity Girls Basketball

The girls basketball team enjoyed a successful season in 2018-19. It began with their fourth consecutive Friends Select Tip-Off tournament championship! The team battled in the first game of the year and pulled off an exciting overtime win. The Falcons seemed to enjoy extra basketball, as they won every overtime game this year. The season ended with an OT victory over Phil-Mont Christian Academy in front of a raucous crowd. It was the 15th win for the Falcons—their most since 2004. The team chemistry with this group was impressive to watch all year long. They truly believed, and proved, that positive energy and teamwork combined with hard work can go a long way toward success.

Varsity Swimming

The varsity girls swim team proved once again that they are a strong program within the Friends Schools League (FSL), with wins over Moorestown Friends, Westtown School, and Abington Friends this season. The Falcons improved throughout the season and finished with a great showing at the FSL swim championship meet. The Falcons earned medals in the 400 relay (bronze), the 100 butterfly (silver), the 100 freestyle (bronze), and the 100 backstroke (silver). The boys performed well at champs also, as they placed 6th in the league. A highlight for the boys team was a 61-52 win over Abington Friends in the last home meet of the season.

Varsity Squash

This was the first year of varsity squash at Friends Select. We previously had a club team and two years ago started a middle school program with a plan to extend it this year. That plan worked well as the Falcons enjoyed a 3-1 season in year one! The young players who moved up through our middle school combined nicely with the addition of some new players in the upper school. The excitement around this program is amazing and with the beautiful facilities at the Racquet Club of Philadelphia, there’s a lot to like about the future of Friends Select squash.
