Introducing Friends Select’s New Director of City Curriculum
Margaret Smith has become the new director of city curriculum at Friends Select School. Margaret is certainly no stranger to our community, having taught upper school history since 2012. She was also the upper school InterSession coordinator from 2016-18, and worked to facilitate learning projects that merged classroom study with learning experiences throughout the city. Based on her InterSession work, she was asked to present at the University of Pennsylvania's Global Education Summer Institute with a workshop titled “Bringing Global Arts into the Local Classroom.”
Prior to Friends Select, Margaret taught at the Springside Chestnut Hill Academy and Rutgers University. She has been creating community-based learning opportunities for students since 2007.
“I have lived in Philadelphia for over 20 years because I love this city,” Margaret said. “Philadelphia is rich in resources, but it is also a complicated city that has plenty of struggles. It's that dynamic reality that makes Philadelphia such fertile ground for learning. I am looking forward to forging connections between Friends Select and the community outside our doors, so that all of our students are learning in and from the city and, more importantly, developing the lifelong skills necessary to take active roles in their own communities.”
