As a young reporter for The Falcon, Friends Select alumnus Aaron Kuriloff learned lessons that shaped his career in journalism: how to break news, how to take feedback, and how to be accountable. In his own words, “you own what you write.”
Aaron has held many roles since The Falcon, covering film as an Inquirer intern (a connection made possible by Tr. David Mitchell), local news at the New Orleans Times-Picayune, the NFL for Bloomberg, and overseeing financial markets coverage at the Wall Street Journal.
“The Falcon is a microcosm of every newsroom in the world. There’s no better place to start … we were doing journalism that mattered to our community,” Aaron said.
Community, a core testimony and value of Quakerism, is a common thread throughout Aaron’s career.
“Whether you’re writing about sports, the markets, or the latest FSS cafeteria offerings, storytelling is a powerful tool for building our communities,” Aaron said.
The passion that began at The Falcon has taken Aaron far and wide: from the Louisiana marsh to the streets of Prague, from local news to some of the most recognizable brands in media, from FSS to covering 10 Super Bowls and global markets. Through it all, Aaron credits influences like Tr. David, Tr. Dick Hoffman, Tr. Joe Barbarese, and his fellow Falcon staff members:
“I remember hanging out with [The Falcon] editors and reporters, trying to get the paper laid out by deadline … The Falcon was a place I could express myself and helped me learn to be a writer.”
