Michael Gary Speaks: Spring 2025

As I reflect on the vibrant and dynamic community at Friends Select School,

I am filled with a profound sense of awe. With 662 students, over 215 part- and full-time employees, more than 1,300 caregivers, and thousands of alumni, we truly embody the essence of what it means to be one community. The sense of belonging here—whether in our classrooms, on our athletic field, or in our hallways—is palpable, and it’s awe-inspiring to witness how seamlessly these diverse groups come together.

This sense of unity was on full display when we launched a new tradition last fall: Falcon Fest. Organized by our passionate parent community, this all-school field day celebration is now a beloved fixture. The spirit of school pride and togetherness—along with the laughter and excitement of our students, parent volunteers, faculty, and staff—was overwhelming, and a beautiful reminder of the deep connection we share here at Friends Select.

The recent refurbishment of our Parkway Building gymnasium has also contributed to the overall sense of community and school spirit. What was once a traditional sports venue has now become a true hub of activity and excitement for the entire community. With the facility’s enhancements and improvements, it’s a space that mirrors the caliber of talent in our athletic programs and beyond. I am continually amazed by the excellence in teaching and learning our students experience in facilities that grow and improve for their benefit.

The school’s unwavering dedication to social justice and civic engagement was evident at our recent Student Civic & Community Engagement Summit, where students, faculty, staff, and community partners came together to learn, discuss, and take action on the issues that matter most. I was struck by the energy and engagement of the students who participated and led the planning. The event was a picture of Friend Select’s mission in action, bringing our values around agency, voice, and community partnership to life. Witnessing summit attendees come together to address important social issues left me with a renewed sense of hope and inspiration.

Our commitment to community-building extends far beyond our walls, exhibited by the expansion of our global partnerships and international study opportunities for our upper school students. Through collaboration with schools in other countries, we are providing our students with invaluable experiential learning that broadens their perspectives and deepens their understanding of the world around them. These cultural exchanges are a testament to the power of Friends Select’s mission to educate in service of society.

In all of these moments, I am reminded of how deeply rooted our values are in every facet of school life. The energy and shared purpose that resonate within our community are reflections of the meaningful impact we are making, both in our city and around the world. As we continue to grow and evolve, I am more confident than ever that Friends Select will remain a place where excellence in teaching and learning, commitment to community, and dedication to social responsibility thrive.
